There is no general speed limit on German Autobahnen (motorways), although there is a recommended limit of 130kph (80mph). However, there are actually not many sections of road that are not subject to speed restrictions, introduced for safety and environmental reasons. German Autobahnen are free, while in Austria and Switzerland drivers have to buy a Vignette. An additional toll, a Maut, is payable on some sections. See: Vignette

German motorways are free for passenger traffic. Lorries over 12 tonnes pay Autobahngebühren. On Austrian and Swiss motorways all vehicles must display a Vignette
